The need to go astray, to be destroyed, is an extremely private, distant, passionate, turbulent truth.

At the age of eleven or thereabouts women acquire a poise and an ability to handle difficult situations which a man, if he is lucky, manages to achieve somewhere in the later seventies.

Great insight on personal style and how you become aware of it. Looking forward to this series, Marisa!

‘On A Personal Note’ | Patrick Doss of Sid Mashburn and Suitsupply writes about his style on my blog. And it’s really fucking good.

“My style is not influenced by the perceived ideal of style you see so frequently in popularity today, but rather a cultivation of my person on an instinctual level. It is who I aspire to be. Always be inspired to learn. Learn from those who are simple and humble, the men of habit. Learn who you are and listen to yourself. Put yourself in the situations necessary to make choices consequential to yourself. Having style is a reflection of your past and your posterity. It is an ageless lesson that you can impart to others as the years pass and your voice goes quiet. Remember style always leaves a legacy. Make yours profound and wear it always with love.” - Read it all here

For my morning, I downloaded and am listening to the amazing mix. Thank you, Liam!

gaws:

I was going to put this up earlier, but whatever. Little something for your Sunday night.

A little while ago I noticed that a lot of my favourite hip-hop songs, or at least, the ones that I tend to play at full volume and on repeat for hours, contain samples from old soul songs.  About 2 months ago I started pulling the samples and put them into a playlist. I wasn’t going to post it but it’s too good to keep to myself.

The mixtape is deliberately ordered and plays through beautifully, so when you pop it into iTunes, make sure you arrange it by track order. Either way its, like, really damn great.

There’s too many to do in one tape, so this is going to the first of several tapes. Anyway, tracklist is as follows;

  1. Trouble Man by Marvin Gaye (Sampled in Cool Down by Jazz Liberatorz)
  2. La La Means I Love You by The Delfonics (Sampled in Holla by Ghostface Killah, prod. by Ghostface Killah)
  3. I’ve Changed by The Magictones (Sampled In New Wu by Raekwon, prod. by RZA)
  4. Common Man by David Ruffin (Sampled in Never Change by Jay-Z, prod. by Kanye West)
  5. I Forgot To Be Your Lover by William Bell (Sampled in Growing Pains by Ludacris, prod. by P. King)
  6. Memories Are Here To Stay by The Intruders (Sampled in The 6th Sense by Common, prod. by DJ Premier)
  7. A Legend In His Own Mind by Gil Scott Heron (Sampled in Mr. Nigga by Mos Def, prod. by D-Prosper & Mos Def)
  8. I Choose You by Willie Hutch (Sampled in International Players Anthem by UGK feat. Outkast, prod. by DJ Paul & Juicy J)
  9. I Wish You Were Here by Al Green (Sampled in Wanna Test by Lootpack, prod. by Madlib)
  10. That Ain’t The Way You Make Love by Z.Z. Hill (Sampled in Fancy Clown by Madvillain, prod. by Madlib)
  11. I Want To Go Back by The Impressions (Sampled in Go Crazy by Young Jeezy, prod. by Don Cannon)
  12. It’s Too Late by Otis Redding (Sampled in Gone by Kanye West, prod. by Kanye West)
  13. After Laughter (Comes Tears) by Wendy Rene (Sampled in Tearz by Wu Tang Clan, prod. by RZA)
  14. It’s A Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World by James Brown (Sampled in Man’s World by Beanie Sigel, prod. by NO I.D.)
  15. Down By The River by Buddy Miles (Sampled in She Said by Pharcyde, prod. by Slim Kid 3)
  16. Who Am I by The O’Jays (Sampled In Who I Am by The Diplomats, prod. by Heatmakerz)
  17. Cause I Love You by Lenny Williams (Sampled in Overnight Celebrity by Twista, prod. by Kanye West)
  18. Lovin’ You by Johnny “Guitar” Watson (Sampled in People Talkin’ by Jay-Z, prod. by Ski)

Good morning, everyone.

It’s rather rainy and miserable here, but sometimes getting up, having a cup of tea and catching up on my dashboard is just what I need. Also, browsing through some thoughtful anonymous comments, and questions that I will ponder throughout my day. I hope your Tuesday is eventful.

When I was young I began to draw an invisible boundary between myself and other people. No matter who I was dealing with, I maintained a set distance, carefully monitoring the person’s attitude so that they wouldn’t get any closer. I didn’t easily swallow what other people told me. My only passions were books and music. As you might guess, I led lonely life.
