I'm also concerned about looking frumpy and/or stupid in Bean Boots, but I think they're a more practical option than Uggs for navigating a campus in the snow. Any more suggestions on how to wear them? I really want them to work.

Personally I think Uggs are only appropriate in the confines of your home, unless you have some of the more practical Ugg boots that have come out recently.
